PowerBook 12-Inch DVI 2003

Featuring a 1.0 GHz PowerPC 7447 (G4) processor with an AltiVec "Velocity Engine" and 512k on-chip level 2 cache, the PowerBook G4/1.0 12" (DVI) came with 256 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM and a 40 GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive (4200 RPM). It offered either a slot-loading 8X "Combo" drive or a 2X "SuperDrive". Connectivity included built-in Bluetooth 1.1, with AirPort Extreme being an optional upgrade, and NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 graphics with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM. This was all enclosed in an appealing aluminum alloy case with a 12.1" TFT XGA display (1024x768). Custom configurations were also possible. In comparison to the PowerBook G4/867 12" it succeeded, this model was quite similar but provided a faster processor with double the on-chip L2 cache, double the onboard RAM, and superior graphics. It also notably replaced the Mini-VGA port with a Mini-DVI port and upgraded from USB 1.1 to USB 2.0.

The 12-inch model was lauded for its exceptional portability without a significant compromise in power, a balance that appealed to frequent travelers and students. Its sturdy aluminum construction gave it a premium feel that was often highlighted in user feedback. The upgrade to a 1.0 GHz processor and the inclusion of USB 2.0 ports were seen as significant improvements that enhanced its utility for everyday tasks. However, the 32 MB of video RAM was considered a limiting factor for more demanding graphic applications and gaming. Despite this, its compact design, decent performance for its size, and the sharp display made it a beloved and highly regarded machine in its class.
