Overview

The Apple MacBook "Core Duo" 1.83 13-Inch is powered by a 1.83 GHz Intel "Core Duo" processor (T2400), with two independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip. It includes a 2 MB shared "on chip" level 2 cache, a 667 MHz frontside bus, and 512 MB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) installed in pairs (two 256 MB modules). The system features a 60.0 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive with "Sudden Motion Sensor" technology, an 8X slot-loading DVD-ROM/CD-RW "Combo" drive, an integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics processor sharing 64 MB of DDR2 SDRAM with main memory, and a 13.3" widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display (1280x800 native resolution).

Similar to the MacBook Pro "Core Duo" 15-Inch models, the MacBooks offer AirPort Extreme (802.11g), Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a FireWire "400" port, two USB 2.0 ports, and optical digital audio in/out. They also provide video out capabilities (mini-DVI) that, for the first time on an Apple "consumer" notebook, officially support a non-mirrored external display. These models also incorporate the "scrolling TrackPad", a built-in iSight video camera, an Apple Remote for Apple Front Row software, and the innovative "MagSafe" power connector. Exclusive to the MacBook is a redesigned "flush against the bed" keyboard that avoids touching the screen, a "no moving parts" magnetic latch that secures without a catch, and a case design that simplifies RAM and hard drive upgrades.

Evaluation

As the successor to the iBook, the first-generation MacBook symbolized the transition from PowerPC by incorporating an Intel Core Duo processor. This entry-level model, with its 1.83 GHz CPU, offered sufficient performance for many users at the time. Particularly praised were the MagSafe power connector and iSight camera inherited from the MacBook Pro, as well as a highly maintainable design that allowed for easy access to RAM and the HDD. The glossy display was a matter of preference, but many appreciated its vibrancy. On the other hand, the standard 512MB of memory sometimes resulted in sluggish performance, and a memory upgrade was often recommended. While its graphics capabilities were limited, it was widely embraced as an attractively priced machine that offered an entry into the world of Intel Macs.
