Overview

Technically a "build-to-order" configuration of the 1.6 GHz 13-inch MacBook Air, the "Core 2 Duo" 1.8 13" (Original) is also documented as a distinct model for convenience. The only differences are the processor and storage, as this version is equipped with an SSD instead of a hard drive.

This MacBook Air is powered by a custom-miniaturized 1.8 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (P7700) with two independent cores, a 4 MB on-chip shared L2 cache, and an 800 MHz frontside bus.

It features 2 GB of non-upgradable 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, a 64 GB PATA SSD (Solid State Drive), and an integrated Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor that shares 144 MB of DDR2 SDRAM with main memory. The device also includes an iSight camera, a "MacBook-style" full-size backlit keyboard with an ambient light sensor, and a 13.3-inch widescreen TFT LED-backlit "glossy" display (1280x800 resolution) in a three-pound, razor-thin (0.16-0.76 inch) aluminum case.

Connectivity options include AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a single USB 2.0 port, analog audio out, and a micro-DVI port for video output to an external 24" display. It lacks built-in Ethernet (an adapter was available), Firewire, and optical audio I/O.

Similar to all subnotebooks, it's important to note that Apple's design choices involved trade-offs in performance, expansion, connectivity, and price to achieve its compact size and low weight. Despite its impressively large 13.3-inch display, full-size keyboard, and a trackpad supporting "multi-touch gesturing" (including two-finger scroll, pinch, and rotate), it employs slower processors than standard MacBooks of its time, has fixed 2 GB of RAM, no internal optical drive, and a non-user-replaceable battery.

Evaluation

This build-to-order version of the original MacBook Air addressed one of the biggest performance bottlenecks by swapping the slow hard drive for a 64 GB SSD. This change was transformative, providing significantly faster boot times and application launches, which made the entire system feel far more responsive. While the slightly faster 1.8 GHz processor offered a minor boost, the SSD was the real star. Despite this improvement, it still shared the original's limitations of non-upgradable RAM and a single USB port, positioning it as a premium option for those who valued speed in an ultra-thin form factor.
