Overview

The Apple iMac G3/700 Special Edition (Summer 2001) is equipped with a 700 MHz PowerPC 750cx (G3) processor featuring a 256k on-chip level 2 cache. It includes 256 MB of RAM, a 60.0 GB Ultra ATA hard drive, a slot-loading 8X/4X/24X CD-RW drive, and ATI Rage 128 Ultra (AGP 2X) graphics with 16 MB of VRAM. This system, with its Harmon-Kardon sound and Firewire "400" ports, is housed in a translucent "graphite" or "snow" all-in-one chassis with a 15-inch CRT display.

This Special Edition model is similar to the iMac G3/600 (Summer 2001)—both were available in graphite and snow cases—but it came with a faster processor, which was the fastest offered in a CRT-based iMac, and a larger hard drive (60 GB versus 40 GB).

It should be noted that Apple designated this line as the "Summer 2001" series, referencing summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Evaluation

The iMac G3/700 SE marked the pinnacle of the CRT-based iMac G3 line, serving as its final and fastest model. [14] Unveiled in the summer of 2001, this machine boasted the series' top specifications, featuring a 700 MHz PowerPC G3 processor, 256 MB of RAM, and a 60 GB hard drive. The color options shifted away from flamboyant patterns to the more subdued "Graphite" and clean "Snow" finishes. During this period, Apple was in the midst of its transition to Mac OS X and fully embracing its digital hub strategy. The iMac G3/700 SE clearly signaled the coming age of digital music with its standard CD-RW drive and iTunes software. By maximizing performance while retaining the iconic all-in-one design, this machine was highly regarded as a fitting finale for the iMac G3, a product line often credited with saving Apple. The following year, the iMac G4 was introduced, closing the chapter on the G3 era, but its legacy continues to be celebrated.
