The iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 17-Inch is powered by a 2.0 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (T7200), which integrates two independent processor "cores" onto a single silicon chip. It includes a 4 MB shared level 2 cache, a 667 MHz system bus, 1 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300), and a 160 GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 RPM). For media, it offers a vertically-mounted, slot-loading DVD+R DL "SuperDrive". Graphics are driven by an ATI Radeon X1600 accelerator on a PCI-Express bus, featuring 128 MB of GDDR3 memory. The all-in-one design also incorporates a built-in iSight video camera and stereo speakers situated beneath the 17" TFT Active Matrix LCD (1440x900 native), engineered to "bounce sound off the desk below".

Connectivity options consist of three USB 2.0 ports, two Firewire "400" ports, integrated AirPort Extreme, and Gigabit Ethernet. Additionally, a mini-DVI port allows for an external display in "extended desktop" mode, offering more than just "mirrored mode".

The transition to the Core 2 Duo processor was praised for significantly boosting this model's performance over its predecessors. The inclusion of the ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card, in particular, offered vastly superior rendering capabilities compared to integrated graphics models, establishing it as a versatile machine for everything from general home use to light creative work.
