Distinct from other "Core 2 Duo" models, the iMac "Core 2 Duo" 1.83 17-Inch (IG) is distinguished primarily by its use of less expensive and lower-performing Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics. When compared to the similar education-only iMac "Core Duo", the main upgrades in this model are the inclusion of a "Core 2 Duo" processor and a larger 160 GB hard drive, replacing the previous 80 GB drive.

This model is equipped with a 1.83 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (T5600), which contains two independent "cores" on one chip, complemented by a 2 MB shared level 2 cache and a 667 MHz system bus. Its specifications include 512 MB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300), a 160 GB Serial ATA hard drive running at 7200 RPM, and a vertical slot-loading "Combo" drive for DVDs and CDs (DVD-ROM/CD-RW). For visuals, it relies on an Intel GMA950 graphics processor sharing 64 MB of DDR2 SDRAM with the main system. The all-in-one design incorporates an iSight video camera and stereo speakers positioned beneath the 17-inch TFT Active Matrix LCD screen (1440x900 native resolution), which is engineered to reflect sound off the underlying desk surface.

For connectivity, the system offers a range of ports: three USB 2.0, two Firewire "400", and Gigabit Ethernet. Wireless capabilities are handled by built-in AirPort Extreme. It also provides a mini-DVI port, enabling the connection of an external display in an "extended desktop" configuration, a feature that goes beyond simple "mirrored mode".

This education-only model was generally seen as competent for basic tasks, though its integrated graphics were a significant drawback for visually intensive applications. The upgrade to a Core 2 Duo processor provided a noticeable speed boost over the previous Core Duo versions, and the larger hard drive was a welcome addition. However, its graphical performance was widely considered insufficient for professional creative work or gaming. It fulfilled a specific niche in the education market by offering the core Intel Mac experience at a reduced price point, but it was not a machine recommended for users with any significant graphics needs.
