Overview

While technically a "build-to-order" upgrade for the iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 27-Inch (Late 2009), the iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.33 27-Inch (Late 2009) is also listed as a distinct model for clarity. The two models are identical apart from the processor.

The iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.33 27-Inch Aluminum (Late 2009) is driven by a 3.33 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (E8600), featuring two independent cores on a single chip, a 6 MB shared level 2 cache, and a 1333 MHz system bus. It is configured with 4 GB of RAM (1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM), a 1 TB (7200 RPM) hard drive, a vertical slot-loading DVD±R DL "SuperDrive", and ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics with 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory.

It also incorporates a built-in iSight camera and stereo speakers beneath the 27" glossy 16:9 LED-backlit TFT Active Matrix LCD (2560x1440 native) display, which includes "IPS technology".

Connectivity consists of four USB 2.0 ports, a Firewire "800" port, integrated AirPort Extreme, and Gigabit Ethernet. Its Mini DisplayPort supports an external display up to 30" (2560x1600) and can also accept input from external DisplayPort sources via adapters, allowing the iMac to serve as an external monitor.

The "Late 2009" iMac line shares a similar aesthetic with earlier Aluminum models but is set apart by an "edge-to-edge" glass design and a "seamless all aluminum enclosure," unlike previous versions with a visible aluminum bezel and plastic back.

Key enhancements include LED-backlit displays with "IPS technology" for better image quality, four RAM slots supporting up to 16 GB (up from two slots/8 GB), an SD Card slot, and redesigned speakers for "louder, clearer sound with better bass response and less distortion".

These iMacs shipped with a compact aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard and the new "Magic Mouse," which features a seamless multi-touch top surface for gesture-based navigation. An optional aluminum remote was also offered for US$19.

Evaluation

This build-to-order model offered the highest processor performance for a 27-inch iMac of the Core 2 Duo generation. The upgrade to 3.33 GHz provided a clear speed advantage in CPU-bound tasks, making it the choice for users seeking a more responsive experience. However, the simultaneous release of quad-core Core i5 and i7 models somewhat overshadowed this top-tier dual-core machine. Nevertheless, its massive, beautiful display and the unique Target Display Mode feature remained compelling, making it an attractive option for users with specific needs.
