Overview

The MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.26 13-Inch (White Polycarbonate "Unibody" - Late 2009) introduced a fresh "glossy white unibody" case construction. This design was inspired by the earlier "Unibody" MacBook and MacBook Pro models but is crafted from polycarbonate instead of aluminum and features a "non-skid" rubberized bottom.

Similar to the aluminum "Unibody" versions, this model incorporates a four-finger "multi-touch" glass trackpad and an integrated battery that is not user-replaceable. Apple claims this battery design extends runtime, allowing this model to provide "up to" 7 hours of use, compared to 5 hours for its predecessor.

This particular model is outfitted with a 45 nm "Penryn" 2.26 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (P7550), featuring two independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip. It includes a 3 MB shared "on chip" level 2 cache, a 1066 MHz frontside bus, 2 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-8500) installed in pairs (two 1 GB modules), a 250 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive, and an 8X DL "SuperDrive". It also boasts a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256 MB of SDRAM shared with main memory and a 13.3" widescreen TFT active-matrix LED-backlit "glossy" display (1280x800 native resolution).

Connectivity options include AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports, a single audio in/out port, and a Mini DisplayPort that supports an external display at 2560x1600. It lacks a Firewire port and an IR receiver for remote support.

Evaluation

Introduced in late 2009, this white unibody MacBook underwent a significant design transformation. Its rounded polycarbonate unibody construction not only enhanced durability but also gave it a more modern and approachable look. The non-skid bottom was also praised as a practical improvement. Performance-wise, it was equipped with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics and faster DDR3 memory, making everyday tasks feel very responsive. The new non-user-replaceable integrated battery, which provided up to 7 hours of runtime, was welcomed by users who prioritized mobility. However, the removal of the FireWire port was a significant drawback for some. Nevertheless, the combination of its updated design, solid performance, and improved battery life made it a very attractive package for the general consumer.
