iMac PowerPC 7445 (G4) 2003

The Apple iMac G4/800 - MacOS X Only (Flat Panel) is driven by an 800 MHz PowerPC 7445 (G4) processor, which includes the AltiVec "Velocity Engine" vector processing unit and a 256k on-chip level 2 cache. It comes with 256 MB of RAM (PC133 SDRAM), a 60.0 GB Ultra ATA/66 hard drive (7200 RPM), a tray-loading 32X "Combo" drive, and NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM (AGP 2X support).

The internal components are contained within a stylish 10.6-inch half-sphere, ice-white case, featuring a chromed stainless steel neck that supports a 15" TFT Active Matrix LCD display.

This model was supplied with MacOS X 10.2 "Jaguar" and, unlike the earlier iMac G4/800 (Flat Panel) (M8812LL/A), it cannot boot into MacOS 9. It also included an ice-white Apple Pro Keyboard, Mouse, and Speakers. In contrast to some previous iMacs that used convection cooling, the "Flat Panel" series is cooled by a quiet internal fan.

The most significant feature of this model was its inability to boot into MacOS 9. This was seen as a strong statement of Apple's commitment to the complete transition to MacOS X and was recognized as a turning point in Mac history. In terms of performance, there were some minor specification changes, such as the inclusion of a Combo drive instead of a SuperDrive, but the basic performance was equivalent to the previous 800MHz model. For users who did not require the classic environment, it was an attractive option as a more refined, native MacOS X machine.
