Overview

The 13-inch MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.26 (SD/Firewire 800 - Mid-2009) is equipped with a 45 nm "Penryn" 2.26 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (P7550 or P8400). This CPU has two independent cores on a single chip, a 3 MB shared level 2 cache, and a 1066 MHz frontside bus. It comes with 2 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-8500) installed as two 1 GB modules, a 160 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive, and an 8X DL "SuperDrive". Graphics are handled by an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor, which shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with the main memory. The system also includes an integrated iSight camera and an LED-backlit 13.3-inch widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display with a native resolution of 1280x800.

For connectivity, this model provides AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a FireWire "800" port, two USB 2.0 ports, a "Mini DisplayPort" for an external display up to 2560x1600, an SD card slot, and the iPhone-style "combined optical digital output/headphone out" port, which also serves as a user-selectable analog audio line in.

This model is housed in the same "Unibody" aluminum case as the 13-inch non-Pro MacBook it succeeded, milled from a single block of aluminum. It shares the backlit keyboard and "no button" glass "multi-touch" trackpad with four-finger gesture support and programmable zones. While the internal architecture is similar, there are key distinctions. The "Mid-2009" MacBook Pro supports more RAM, boasts an improved display with a "60% greater color gamut," and features a non-swappable battery that extends life to 7 hours from the previous 5. It also adds the SD card slot and FireWire "800" port but omits the optical digital audio input that was previously standard.

Evaluation

The 13-inch MacBook Pro released in mid-2009 was a landmark model, elevating the former "MacBook" line to "Pro" status. While inheriting the unibody design, it brought back the FireWire 800 port, a feature eagerly awaited by professional users, and added a new SD card slot, significantly enhancing its expandability. The display was another major attraction, with a claimed 60% greater color gamut that appealed to photo and video editors. Furthermore, the adoption of an integrated battery extended its runtime to 7 hours, a feature highly valued by users who prioritized mobility. It successfully balanced performance, portability, and connectivity, establishing itself as a worthy "Pro" option for a wide range of users.
