Overview

The MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 13-inch (SD/Firewire 800 - Mid-2009) is equipped with a 45 nm "Penryn" 2.53 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (P8700). This CPU features two independent cores on a single chip, a 3 MB shared level 2 cache, and a 1066 MHz frontside bus. It comes with 4 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-8500) installed as two 2 GB modules, a 250 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive, and an 8X DL "SuperDrive". Graphics are handled by an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor, which shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with the main memory. It also includes an integrated iSight camera and an LED-backlit 13.3-inch widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display with a 1280x800 native resolution.

Connectivity options include AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a FireWire "800" port, two USB 2.0 ports, and an SD card slot. It also has a "Mini DisplayPort" for an external display up to 2560x1600 and the iPhone-style "combined optical digital output/headphone out" port, which serves as a user-selectable analog audio line in.

This model is housed in essentially the same "Unibody" case as the 13-inch non-Pro MacBook it replaced, milled from a single block of aluminum. It features the same backlit keyboard and "no button" glass "multi-touch" trackpad with four-finger gesture support and programmable zones. While the internal architecture is very similar, there are significant differences. The "Mid-2009" 13-Inch MacBook Pro models support more RAM, have an enhanced display with a reported "60% greater color gamut," and a non-swappable battery that provides 7 hours of life (up from 5 hours). They also feature the aforementioned SD card slot and a Firewire "800" port, but no longer include the previously standard optical digital audio input. This version is slightly faster and is configured with more standard RAM as well.

Evaluation

The higher-end 13-inch MacBook Pro, introduced in mid-2009, came equipped with a faster processor and more standard RAM, delivering performance that met professional demands. A standout feature was the significantly improved color gamut of the display, which earned high praise from photographers and designers. The inclusion of a FireWire 800 port and an SD card slot greatly enhanced connectivity with peripherals. The adoption of an integrated battery, providing up to 7 hours of life, boosted the machine's value by successfully blending portability with productivity. Combined with the sturdy unibody enclosure, it is remembered as a remarkably well-balanced machine that offered uncompromising performance in a compact form factor.
