The MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.5 17-Inch (Late 2011) is a custom-order version of the MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.4 17-Inch (Late 2011), but it is documented as a distinct model for user convenience. The only differences between the two are the processor and its corresponding larger level 3 cache.
This MacBook Pro model comes with a 32 nm "Sandy Bridge" 2.5 GHz Intel "Core i7" processor (2860QM), which has four independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip, an 8 MB shared level 3 cache, and 4 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-10600) installed in two 2 GB modules. It also features a 750 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive, an 8X DL "SuperDrive", and dual graphics processors—an AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 1 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory and an Intel HD Graphics 3000 that shares 384 MB of system memory—along with an integrated FaceTime HD webcam.
The standard configuration includes an LED-backlit 17.0" widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display with a 1920x1200 native resolution. An "anti-glare" (matte) display was also available for an additional US$50.
Connectivity options include AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a Firewire "800" port, three USB 2.0 ports, separate audio in and out ports, an ExpressCard/34 expansion slot, and a "Thunderbolt" port. This port is backward compatible with Mini DisplayPort, supports external displays up to 2560x1600, passes an audio signal, and allows connection to other Thunderbolt peripherals with up to 10 Gbps of bandwidth in both directions.
The device uses a "Unibody" aluminum case milled from a single piece of aluminum, and it includes a backlit keyboard, a "no button" glass "inertial" multi-touch trackpad, and a non-swappable battery estimated by Apple to provide 7 hours of life.
When compared to its predecessor, this model is identical aside from having a faster processor and superior graphics.
