Overview

The MacBook Pro "Core i5" 2.3 13-Inch (Early 2011/Thunderbolt) is powered by a 32 nm "Sandy Bridge" 2.3 GHz Intel "Core i5" processor (2415M). It features two independent cores on a single silicon chip, a 3 MB shared level 3 cache, and 4 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-10600) installed in two 2 GB modules. The system includes a 320 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive, an 8X DL "SuperDrive," and an Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor that shares 384 MB of memory with the system. It also has an integrated FaceTime HD webcam and a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display with a 1280x800 native resolution.

Connectivity options comprise AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a FireWire "800" port, two USB 2.0 ports, audio in/out, an SDXC card slot, and the new "Thunderbolt" port. This port is backward compatible with Mini DisplayPort, supports an external display at 2560x1600, passes an audio signal, and supports other Thunderbolt peripherals with up to 10 Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth.

This model features a "Unibody" aluminum case milled from a single piece of aluminum, a backlit keyboard, a "no button" glass "inertial" multi-touch trackpad, and a non-swappable battery with an estimated 7 hours of life.

Compared to its forerunner, this model shares a very similar external enclosure, but introduces a higher-resolution webcam and the aforementioned Thunderbolt port. Internally, it boasts a significantly faster architecture, quicker RAM, and improved graphics.

Evaluation

Introduced in early 2011, this 13-inch MacBook Pro featured a significant performance boost over its predecessor, thanks to the Sandy Bridge Core i5 processor. Its most notable feature was the debut of the innovative high-speed Thunderbolt port, which dramatically improved connectivity to external storage and displays. The graphics performance was also upgraded to Intel HD Graphics 3000, which comfortably handled daily tasks and even some graphics processing. The inclusion of a FaceTime HD camera was another welcome improvement that enhanced the quality of video calls. The combination of these advanced features with the robust unibody design cemented its reputation as a well-balanced and beloved machine for many years.
