Overview

The MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.66 13-Inch (Mid-2010) is equipped with a 45 nm "Penryn" 2.66 GHz Intel "Core 2 Duo" processor (P8800). This CPU features two independent cores on a single chip, a 3 MB shared level 2 cache, and a 1066 MHz frontside bus. It comes standard with 4 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-8500) installed as two 2 GB modules, a 320 GB Serial ATA (5400 RPM) hard drive, and an 8X DL "SuperDrive." Graphics are powered by an NVIDIA GeForce 320M processor, which shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM with main memory. The system also includes an integrated iSight camera and an LED-backlit 13.3-inch widescreen TFT active-matrix "glossy" display with a 1280x800 native resolution.

Connectivity options include AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Gigabit Ethernet, a FireWire "800" port, two USB 2.0 ports, and an SD card slot. It also features a "Mini DisplayPort" that supports an external display at 2560x1600 and passes an audio signal, along with the iPhone-style "combined optical digital output/headphone out" port, which serves as a user-selectable analog audio line in.

This model is housed in a "Unibody" aluminum case milled from a single piece of aluminum and features a backlit keyboard, a new "no button" glass "inertial" multi-touch trackpad, and a non-swappable battery that provides up to 10 hours of life.

Compared to its predecessor, this model has a very similar external design and connectivity, except for the improved trackpad and the Mini DisplayPort's ability to transmit audio. Internally, it shares a similar architecture with the same bus speed and memory type but boasts upgraded graphics and longer battery life.

Evaluation

As the higher-end 13-inch MacBook Pro model from mid-2010, this 2.66 GHz version offered enhanced processing power. While it did not transition to the Core i-series processors, the adoption of NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics significantly improved graphical capabilities, a move that was well-received by many users. The exceptional battery life of up to 10 hours was another major draw for this model. Additionally, the new trackpad with inertial scrolling further improved usability. Despite using an older generation processor, its excellent balance of graphics performance and battery life made it a very compelling choice for power users who valued portability.
