While there are many differences, the iPod touch (5th Gen) conceptually remains an "iPhone without a phone," just like its predecessors, and Apple promoted it with a strong emphasis on "fun."
To deliver this fun, the iPod touch (5th Gen) features a 4" widescreen multi-touch IPS "retina" display (1136x640, 326 ppi) and dual cameras: a 5-megapixel rear "iSight" camera with LED flash for 1080p video and a 1.2-megapixel front "FaceTime HD" camera for 720p video. It also supports Bluetooth 4.0, dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, Siri, and AirPlay, in addition to the expected music, photo, video, and iOS app capabilities.
The iPod touch (5th Gen) is powered by a 1 GHz dual-core A5 processor, has 512 MB of RAM, and was offered with 32 GB or 64 GB of flash storage (a 16 GB option was added on June 26, 2014). Apple estimated battery life at 40 hours of music and 8 hours of video playback.
Unlike earlier models that were black or white, the 5th Gen iPod touch features aluminum "unibody" cases in six colors: a dark gray "slate" (with a black front) and silver, pink, yellow, blue, and red (with white fronts). On September 10, 2013, the "slate" was replaced by a gunmetal "space gray." It also introduced a "pop out" rear nub for attaching an "iPod touch loop" wrist strap (the 16 GB model shipped without this strap, but it was available for US$9).
