Overview

The Apple iPod nano (Fifth Generation/Video Camera) retains the aluminum and glass case of its predecessor, the iPod nano (4th Generation), but the nine available colors—silver, black, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, and (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition—feature a "glossy" finish instead of matte. It is equipped with a larger, higher-quality 2.2" TFT display (240x376, 204 ppi), along with an integrated microphone and speaker.

For storage, it offers either 8 GB or 16 GB of flash memory, which can hold 2000 or 4000 songs, 7000 or 14,000 photos, and 8 or 16 hours of video, respectively.

Beyond the new finish, larger display, and audio features, the 5th Gen iPod nano also introduced a video camera capable of shooting H.264 VGA (640x480) video at 30 FPS with AAC audio and various real-time effects (it could not take still photos). Other new features included a built-in FM radio with "live pause" and "iTunes tagging," an integrated pedometer, VoiceOver technology for announcing tracks, and "Genius Mixes" for creating automatic playlists.

Battery life was 24 hours for music and 5 hours for video, matching the 3rd Gen model and improving on the 4th Gen's video playback time. Note that the yellow and (PRODUCT) RED colors were available exclusively from Apple.

Evaluation

The fifth-generation iPod nano, released in 2009, was lauded for its feature-rich design, most notably the inclusion of a video camera. Reviewers praised the larger 2.2-inch display and the new glossy, anodized aluminum finish. The video camera, while only capable of VGA resolution and unable to capture still photos, was seen as a fun and convenient addition for capturing spontaneous moments. The built-in FM radio with live pause and iTunes tagging was another highly requested feature that was well-received. The integrated pedometer and speaker further enhanced its versatility. However, some critics pointed out the camera's poor performance in low-light conditions and the awkward placement of the lens. Despite these minor flaws, the 5th Gen nano was considered a significant step forward, offering a compelling package of entertainment and fitness features in a sleek, portable design.
