Overview

Fundamentally, the original Apple iPod touch (1st Gen) is essentially an iPhone without the "phone" functionality, EDGE support, integrated camera, and Bluetooth capabilities. Its initial software was also comparatively limited.

Like the iPhone, it features a 3.5" 320x480 "multi-touch" display—though of lower quality—an accelerometer for automatic screen rotation, an ambient light sensor, and built-in Wi-Fi (802.11b/g). It was available with 8 GB, 16 GB, or (from February 5, 2008) 32 GB of flash memory.

Bundled software included Safari, YouTube, calendar, contacts, clock, and calculator apps, plus standard audio, photo, and video functions. It initially lacked the iPhone's phone, email, text, stocks, maps, weather, and notes apps. However, starting January 15, 2008, Apple sold the Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather, and Notes apps for US$19.99, and from February 5, 2008, included them with all new models.

The iPod touch has a slightly thinner and shorter design similar to the original iPhone, but with black trim around the display instead of silver. Its headphone jack is on the bottom and not recessed, and it lacks a speaker and microphone. Battery life is rated at 22 hours for music and 5 hours for video.

Evaluation

The first-generation iPod touch was widely seen as a revolutionary device, effectively delivering the core experience of the iPhone without the phone contract. [23] Its multi-touch display and Wi-Fi capability, allowing for web browsing with Safari and watching YouTube, were game-changing features for a media player at the time. [28] It was praised for its beautiful design, which was even thinner than the original iPhone. [36] However, it also faced criticism for its limitations; it lacked external volume controls, a built-in speaker, a camera, and Bluetooth. [33, 36] Furthermore, essential apps like Mail and Notes were initially not included and required a paid software upgrade, a decision that proved unpopular. Despite these shortcomings, its groundbreaking interface and functionality set a new standard for portable media devices and paved the way for the App Store era. [23, 27]
