Fundamentally, the original Apple iPod touch (1st Gen) is essentially an iPhone without the "phone" functionality, EDGE support, integrated camera, and Bluetooth capabilities. Its initial software was also comparatively limited.
Like the iPhone, it features a 3.5" 320x480 "multi-touch" display—though of lower quality—an accelerometer for automatic screen rotation, an ambient light sensor, and built-in Wi-Fi (802.11b/g). It was available with 8 GB, 16 GB, or (from February 5, 2008) 32 GB of flash memory.
Bundled software included Safari, YouTube, calendar, contacts, clock, and calculator apps, plus standard audio, photo, and video functions. It initially lacked the iPhone's phone, email, text, stocks, maps, weather, and notes apps. However, starting January 15, 2008, Apple sold the Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather, and Notes apps for US$19.99, and from February 5, 2008, included them with all new models.
The iPod touch has a slightly thinner and shorter design similar to the original iPhone, but with black trim around the display instead of silver. Its headphone jack is on the bottom and not recessed, and it lacks a speaker and microphone. Battery life is rated at 22 hours for music and 5 hours for video.
