Overview

The Apple iPod U2 Special Edition (Fifth Generation - Enhanced) was internally identical to the 30 GB version of the iPod Fifth Generation (Enhanced) but was priced US$30 higher (at US$279). It was capable of holding "up to" 7,500 songs in "128-Kbps AAC format," "up to 40 hours" of video, and "up to" 25,000 photos.

Externally, it was identical to the iPod U2 Edition 5th Generation, featuring a red "ClickWheel" and a "gloss black metal" rear case with laser-etched autographs of the U2 band members, a signature of the U2 models.

Like the standard "Enhanced" Fifth Generation iPod, it had a "2.5-inch (diagonal) color LCD [display] with LED backlight" reported to be "up to 60% brighter" than the display on the previous iPod 5G models. Software enhancements included a search function and updated iconography. All Fifth Generation iPods—U2, original, and "enhanced"—could play various games like Tetris and Pac Man from iTunes. The battery life of the "Enhanced" models was improved for slideshows and video playback, while remaining the same for music.

Evaluation

This enhanced U2 Special Edition continued the appeal of its predecessor, targeting devoted fans of the band. The evaluation rested almost entirely on its exclusive aesthetics, as its internals were identical to the standard 30GB iPod 5th Gen (Enhanced). The combination of the all-black front, the signature red Click Wheel, and the laser-etched autographs on the gloss black metal back was a striking design that commanded a premium. For U2 enthusiasts, the higher price was justified by the unique design and the collectibility of the device. For the general consumer, however, it offered no functional advantage over the standard model, making it a purchase driven by fandom rather than technical merit. It was praised for carrying over the brighter screen and software improvements of the 'Enhanced' lineup, such as the search function.
