Overview

The "original" Apple iPod classic (Sixth Generation) was equipped with an 80 GB or 160 GB 4200 RPM ATA-66 hard drive, capable of holding "up to" 20,000 or 40,000 songs in "128-Kbps AAC format," or "up to 100 hours" or "up to 200 hours" of video, respectively.

Externally, the iPod classic models were similar in design to the iPod 5G Enhanced, featuring a 2.5" color LCD with an LED backlight (320x240, 163 ppi). However, they used slightly thinner cases with either a silver or black anodized aluminum front and a chromed stainless steel back, a change from the white or black polycarbonate fronts of previous models. Notably, these were the first "full size" iPod models not offered in white.

The iPod classic models also delivered significantly improved battery life compared to their predecessors: 30 hours of music and 5 hours of video for the 80 GB model, and 40 hours of music and 7 hours of video for the 160 GB model. A downside was that these models no longer supported video out directly from the headphone jack, only from the dock.

The software was substantially upgraded with an interface inspired by "MacOS X Leopard" and the iPhone's OS X, featuring a Cover Flow option for album selection. It also came bundled with three games: iQuiz, Klondike, and Vortex.

Evaluation

The 6th generation iPod classic, released in 2007, was a refinement of the iconic music player, praised for its massive storage capacity and all-metal design. The 80GB and 160GB models offered a home for vast music libraries, a feature that was highly valued by music lovers. The new anodized aluminum front, available in silver or black, gave the device a more premium feel compared to its plastic predecessors. The updated user interface, featuring Cover Flow, was a visual treat, though some users found it less practical than a simple list view. The battery life was significantly improved, a welcome change for users on the go. However, the audio quality, while clear, was considered by some to be a step down from the warmer sound of the 5.5G iPod. The removal of direct video output from the headphone jack was also a point of contention. Despite these minor criticisms, the 6th generation iPod classic was a resounding success, a testament to the enduring appeal of a dedicated device for music.
