Overview

The Apple iPod (Third Generation - Third Revision) was equipped with a 15 GB, 20 GB, or 40 GB 4200 RPM ATA-66 hard drive, capable of holding "up to" 3700, 5000, or 10,000 songs, respectively, in "128-Kbps AAC format." It featured a "2-inch (diagonal) [monochrome] LCD display with blue-white LED backlight" housed in a case with an "iBook white" front and a stainless steel back.

This third generation introduced several hardware improvements over earlier models, including a thinner, lighter, and more rounded design, and a "dock" for easy connection to a computer and stereo systems. The now-backlit solid-state buttons were moved from around the touch wheel to above it, a change that drew mixed reactions. However, the increased skip protection (up to 25 minutes) was a welcome feature.

Software enhancements included greater customization options, a voice recorder, games, and an alarm clock. The estimated battery life was eight hours.

Evaluation

This final revision of the third-generation iPod continued to be defined by its sleek, slim profile and the groundbreaking Dock Connector. The updated storage options, including a substantial 40GB model, were well-received, catering to users with growing digital music libraries. However, the core user experience remained centered around the controversial control layout, with the touch-sensitive buttons separated from the wheel. This design, while aesthetically clean, continued to polarize opinion; some users adapted to and appreciated its modern feel, while others yearned for the tactile feedback of integrated buttons. The bright blue-white backlight for the screen and the red glow of the buttons gave it a distinctive look. It was seen as the most refined version of a bold design direction before Apple course-corrected with the universally praised Click Wheel in the next generation.
