The Apple iPod mini (Second Generation) was similar to the original, but the second-gen models featured richer, deeper shades of four original colors—silver, blue, green, and pink (gold was discontinued). The pressure-sensitive "ClickWheel" buttons were now color-matched to the housing, unlike the gray buttons on the original. Battery life was significantly boosted to 18 hours (up from 8), and a larger 6 GB capacity was offered. However, it no longer shipped with a Firewire cable or an AC adapter and was introduced at a lower starting price (US$199).
Like the original, the second-gen models used a compact 3.6 x 2.0 x 0.5 inch anodized aluminum case with a 1.67-inch grayscale LCD and a "ClickWheel" for navigation. Apple advertised that the 4 GB and 6 GB versions could hold approximately 1,000 and 1,500 songs, respectively, in "128-Kbps AAC format."
Battery life was estimated at 18 hours of music playback, with 25 minutes of skip protection.
