Overview

The Apple iPod (Third Generation - Second Revision) was equipped with a 10 GB, 20 GB, or 40 GB 4200 RPM ATA-66 hard drive, capable of holding "up to" 2500, 5000, or 10,000 songs, respectively, in "128-Kbps AAC format." It featured a "2-inch (diagonal) [monochrome] LCD display with blue-white LED backlight" housed in a case with an "iBook white" front and a stainless steel back.

This third generation introduced several hardware improvements over earlier models, including a thinner, lighter, and more rounded design, and a "dock" for easy connection to a computer and stereo systems. The now-backlit solid-state buttons were moved from around the touch wheel to above it, a change that drew mixed reactions. However, the increased skip protection (up to 25 minutes) was a welcome feature.

Software enhancements included greater customization options, a voice recorder, games, and an alarm clock. The estimated battery life was eight hours.

Evaluation

This revision of the third-generation iPod maintained the core attributes of the original release while adjusting the storage configurations. The defining features remained the slim, elegant chassis and the introduction of the Dock Connector, which was highly praised for its convenience and for fostering a new market of third-party accessories. However, the controversial design choice of separating the control buttons from the touch wheel continued to be a point of discussion among users, with opinions split between an appreciation for its clean aesthetic and a preference for the ergonomics of previous models. The backlit red buttons and all-touch interface were considered modern and sleek. This version, with its adjusted capacity options including a new 40GB flagship, was seen as a maturation of the third-generation design, solidifying its place in the market before the next major interface evolution.
