Overview

The iPod nano (7th Gen/2.5" Multitouch - 2015) is virtually identical to the earlier iPod nano (7th Gen) from 2012, but it was released with a different color palette: "space gray," gold, silver, hot pink, blue, and red. The gray model has a black front, while the others have a white front. It also has different operating system requirements for the connected Mac or PC. Notably for users of older systems, the 2015 version is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.6, Windows XP, or Windows Vista. It also has some unique identifiers, as meticulously documented by Everyi.com.

All iPod nano (7th Gen) models feature a 2.5" color TFT display (240x432, 202 ppi), 16 GB of flash storage, and a design resembling a "mini iPod touch." They include a "home" button, support a multitouch interface, and run an iOS 6-inspired OS, but cannot run iOS apps.

Other features include H.264 video playback (720x576), Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless audio, an integrated pedometer, and an FM radio with "live pause." It also supports Nike+iPod, VoiceOver, and "Shake to Shuffle," but lacks a microphone, speaker, or camera.

The 16 GB of storage can hold about 4000 songs or 14,000 photos. Apple estimates battery life at "up to" 30 hours for music or 3.5 hours for video.

Evaluation

The 2015 iPod nano was the final refresh of the long-running line, and it was a cosmetic one. The internal hardware, including the 16GB of storage and the 2.5-inch multitouch display, remained unchanged from the 2012 model. The only update was a new range of colors, including a popular 'space gray' and a vibrant blue and pink. Reviewers noted that by 2015, the nano was a device for a very specific user: someone who wanted a dedicated, offline music player with a simple interface and no distractions. The inclusion of Bluetooth was a key feature, allowing for use with wireless headphones, and the built-in Nike+ support and pedometer made it a solid workout companion. However, its inability to connect to Wi-Fi or access streaming services made it feel like a relic of a bygone era for many. It was a final, colorful send-off for a beloved product line, but one that ultimately couldn't compete in a world dominated by smartphones.
