The iPod shuffle 3rd Generation (Late 2009/Colors) models were externally almost identical to the previous 3rd Generation iPod shuffle, but were offered in an expanded color palette. In addition to the original black and silver, they were available in blue, green, and pink, along with a new all-stainless steel "Special Edition."
Internally, the "Late 2009/Colors" models introduced a 2 GB capacity option alongside the original 4 GB version (the "Special Edition" was exclusively 4 GB).
All color variants of the 3rd Generation iPod shuffle utilized a simple three-button controller (volume up, volume down, and "action") integrated into the earphone cable, along with "VoiceOver" technology for navigation. The "action" button's function varied: a press and hold would announce the title/artist, while a longer press until a tone would allow playlist selection via VoiceOver.
The 2 GB and 4 GB flash memory capacities of the iPod shuffle 3rd Gen (Late 2009/Colors) could hold up to 500 and 1000 songs, respectively. Apple reported an estimated battery life of ten hours.
