Overview

Although marketed as a portable digital audio player that also handles video, the Apple iPod Fifth Generation (with Video) was the company's first major entry into the portable video market. It used a 30 GB or 60 GB 4200 RPM ATA-66 hard drive, holding "up to" 7,500 or 15,000 songs in "128-Kbps AAC format." Apple also stated the drives could hold "over 1000" or "2000" 4-minute videos, respectively. Both capacities featured a case with either an "iBook white" or "jet black" front and a chromed stainless steel back, and were significantly thinner than previous full-sized iPods. They had a "2.5-inch (diagonal) QVGA transflective over 260,000 color LCD display" (320x240) with a "white LED" backlight, which was larger and higher-resolution than earlier models.

The iPod 5G could display photos directly from a digital camera using the optional iPod Camera Connector (US$29) and show photo slideshows on its internal screen or a TV via the included AV cable. The optional Universal Dock (US$39) provided S-video, data, audio output, and support for the Apple Remote (US$29). Unlike previous iPods, it supported video playback on both the internal display and a TV (at up to 480x480 resolution).

Apple reported that the 30 GB model offered 14 hours of music, 3 hours of slideshows, and 2 hours of video, while the 60 GB model provided 20 hours of music, 4 hours of slideshows, and 3 hours of video.

Evaluation

Commonly known as the iPod Video, this fifth-generation model was a watershed moment, marking Apple's serious entry into portable video. The ability to play music videos and TV shows purchased from the iTunes Store was its killer feature. It was highly praised for its large, bright 2.5-inch color screen, which made video viewing a viable and enjoyable experience. [19, 24, 35] The device was also significantly thinner than its predecessors, a design feat that was widely appreciated. Audiophiles particularly favored this generation, with many claiming its Wolfson DAC chip produced a superior, warmer sound quality compared to later models that used different components. [46, 47] While video playback time was limited, the overall package of a superb music player, a capable photo viewer, and a groundbreaking portable video device made it one of the most beloved and well-regarded iPods ever released.
