Although marketed as a portable digital audio player that also handles video, the Apple iPod Fifth Generation (with Video) was the company's first major entry into the portable video market. It used a 30 GB or 60 GB 4200 RPM ATA-66 hard drive, holding "up to" 7,500 or 15,000 songs in "128-Kbps AAC format." Apple also stated the drives could hold "over 1000" or "2000" 4-minute videos, respectively. Both capacities featured a case with either an "iBook white" or "jet black" front and a chromed stainless steel back, and were significantly thinner than previous full-sized iPods. They had a "2.5-inch (diagonal) QVGA transflective over 260,000 color LCD display" (320x240) with a "white LED" backlight, which was larger and higher-resolution than earlier models.
The iPod 5G could display photos directly from a digital camera using the optional iPod Camera Connector (US$29) and show photo slideshows on its internal screen or a TV via the included AV cable. The optional Universal Dock (US$39) provided S-video, data, audio output, and support for the Apple Remote (US$29). Unlike previous iPods, it supported video playback on both the internal display and a TV (at up to 480x480 resolution).
Apple reported that the 30 GB model offered 14 hours of music, 3 hours of slideshows, and 2 hours of video, while the 60 GB model provided 20 hours of music, 4 hours of slideshows, and 3 hours of video.
