Overview

Please be advised that this "GSM" A1428 iPhone 5 model, which supports LTE bands 4 and 17, was specifically designed for the North American market, including carriers like AT&T in the US, Bell, Rogers, Telus and their affiliates in Canada, and Telcel in Mexico.

All iPhone 5 models, irrespective of network compatibility, feature a 4-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch IPS LED-backlit "retina display" with an 1136x640 resolution (326 ppi). They are equipped with dual cameras: a rear 8-megapixel, 1080p "iSight" camera and a front 1.2-megapixel, 720p "FaceTime HD" camera. The device supports 4G/LTE and is housed in a slim, 0.30-inch aluminum "unibody" case with a glass front, available in either dark gray "slate" with a black front or silver with a white front.

Each iPhone 5 is powered by a 1.3 GHz dual-core "Apple A6" processor, contains 1 GB of RAM, and offers 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB of flash storage. It also features dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, three noise-canceling microphones, a bottom-mounted headphone jack, and the new USB 2.0-based Lightning port for connectivity.

Apple's battery life estimates for the iPhone 5 models are up to 40 hours of audio playback, 8 hours of 3G talk time, 8 hours of 3G internet use, 8 hours of 4G/LTE internet use, 10 hours of Wi-Fi internet use, 10 hours of video playback, and 225 hours of standby.

In the US, this "GSM" A1428 iPhone 5 was available locked to and subsidized by AT&T in 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB storage options for US$199, US$299, and US$399, respectively, with a two-year contract. It was also sold unlocked and contract-free for a higher price.

As initially reported by Engadget, this A1428 iPhone 5 model was phased out beginning March 26, 2013. A revised A1428 model with added AWS (1700/2100 MHz) support was sold starting April 12, 2013, which EveryiPhone.com documents as a distinct model for clarity.

Evaluation

The iPhone 5 represented a significant evolution in Apple's smartphone legacy, earning widespread acclaim from technology critics for its meticulously crafted aluminum design and impressive performance improvements. Industry reviewers praised the device's remarkably thin profile and lightweight construction, which redefined expectations for premium smartphone engineering. The introduction of the larger 4-inch Retina display and Lightning connector demonstrated Apple's willingness to embrace meaningful changes while maintaining the elegant simplicity that defined the iPhone experience. Professional evaluations consistently highlighted the A6 processor's exceptional speed and the enhanced camera capabilities, particularly in low-light conditions, positioning the iPhone 5 as a benchmark device that influenced smartphone design trends for years to come.
