Overview

It is important to know that this A1906 iPhone 8 model was sold exclusively for the Japanese market. It supports FDD-LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, and 66, as well as TD-LTE bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42. Most notably, it includes support for Sony's FeliCa for contactless payments via iD and QuicPay, plus Suica on JR East. It was designed for use on Softbank, AU, and NTT DoCoMo in Japan.

All iPhone 8 models, regardless of carrier, have a 4.7-inch widescreen multitouch "True Tone" LED-backlit 1334x750 "Retina HD" display (326 ppi, 625 cd/m2) and a solid-state, taptic-engine-powered "clickless" Home button. It has dual cameras: a rear 12-megapixel 4K camera with OIS, an f/1.8 aperture, a six-element lens, and wide color capture, plus a front 7-megapixel "FaceTime HD" camera supporting 1080p video. The cameras also support motion tracking and augmented reality.

The iPhone 8 has a steel-reinforced, "aerospace-grade" aluminum alloy case with a glass front and back. It is IP67-rated for splash, water, and dust resistance (not waterproof), and includes stereo speakers and a Lightning port. Initially offered in gold, silver, or "Space Gray," a (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition was also sold from April 9 to September 12, 2018.

Internally, the iPhone 8 is driven by a 64-bit, six-core "Apple A11 Bionic" processor, has 2 GB of RAM, and came with 64 GB, 128 GB, or 256 GB of storage (128 GB option added and 256 GB option removed on Sept 10, 2019). It also supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, LTE (4G), and NFC for Apple Pay. The glass back enables Qi-standard wireless charging.

Apple estimates the iPhone 8 provides up to 40 hours of audio, 14 hours of talk time, 12 hours of internet use, and 13 hours of wireless video playback.

In Japan, this model was initially sold unlocked and contract-free for ¥78,800 (64 GB) or ¥95,800 (256 GB). On September 12, 2018, the prices were reduced to ¥67,800 and ¥84,800. On September 10, 2019, the 256 GB model was replaced by a 128 GB one, with prices set at ¥52,800 (64 GB) and ¥57,800 (128 GB). The iPhone 8 was fully discontinued on April 15, 2020.

Evaluation

Technology critics praised the iPhone 8 for delivering exceptional performance through the A11 Bionic processor, marking a significant leap in mobile computing power. The device garnered recognition for its refined glass design and wireless charging capabilities, features that distinguished it from previous generations while maintaining the familiar form factor appreciated by traditional iPhone users. Industry reviews consistently highlighted the improved camera system and display technology, positioning the model as a compelling choice for those seeking premium features without embracing the radical design changes of the iPhone X.
