Overview

It is important to know that this A1898 iPhone 8 Plus model was sold exclusively for the Japanese market. It supports FDD-LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, and 66, as well as TD-LTE bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, and 42. Most significantly, it includes support for Sony's FeliCa for contactless payments via iD and QuicPay, plus Suica on JR East. It was designed for use on Softbank, AU, and NTT DoCoMo in Japan.

All iPhone 8 Plus models have a 5.5-inch widescreen multitouch "True Tone" LED-backlit 1920x1080 "Retina HD" display (401 ppi, 625 cd/m2) and a solid-state, taptic-engine-powered "clickless" Home button. The device features three cameras: dual rear 12-megapixel 4K cameras (one wide-angle f/1.8, one telephoto f/2.8) enabling 2x optical and 10x digital zoom, plus "portrait mode" and lighting effects, OIS, a six-element lens, and wide color capture. The front 7-megapixel "FaceTime HD" camera records 1080p video and supports motion tracking and augmented reality.

The iPhone 8 Plus has a steel-reinforced, "aerospace-grade" aluminum alloy case with a glass front and back. It is IP67-rated for splash, water, and dust resistance (not waterproof), and includes stereo speakers and a Lightning port. Initially offered in gold, silver, or "Space Gray," a (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition was also sold from April 9 to September 12, 2018.

Internally, it's driven by a 64-bit, six-core "Apple A11 Bionic" processor, has 3 GB of RAM, and came with 64, 128, or 256 GB of storage (128 GB added and 256 GB removed on Sept 10, 2019). It supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, LTE (4G), and NFC for Apple Pay. The glass back enables Qi-standard wireless charging.

Apple estimates up to 60 hours of audio, 21 hours of talk time, 13 hours of internet use, and 14 hours of wireless video playback.

In Japan, this model was initially sold unlocked and contract-free for ¥89,800 (64 GB) or ¥106,800 (256 GB). On September 12, 2018, prices were reduced to ¥78,800 and ¥95,800. On September 10, 2019, the 256 GB model was replaced by a 128 GB one, with prices set at ¥62,800 (64 GB) and ¥67,800 (128 GB). The iPhone 8 was fully discontinued on April 15, 2020.

Evaluation

Industry reviewers lauded the iPhone 8 Plus for achieving an exceptional balance between traditional design elements and cutting-edge technology, particularly highlighting the seamless integration of wireless charging through its elegant glass back construction. The device earned recognition for its computational photography advancements, with critics noting how the A11 Bionic chip enabled sophisticated image processing that rivaled dedicated cameras in many scenarios. Professional evaluations emphasized the model's role as Apple's most refined iteration of the classic iPhone design, offering users a premium experience that combined proven reliability with meaningful technological progress.
