Overview

It is important to know that this A1779 iPhone 7 model was sold exclusively for the Japanese market. It supports FDD-LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30, and most significantly, includes support for Sony's FeliCa for contactless payments via iD and QuicPay, as well as Suica on JR East. It was designed for use on Softbank, AU (KDDI), and NTT DoCoMo in Japan.

Regardless of carrier, all iPhone 7 models have a 4.7-inch widescreen multitouch LED-backlit 1334x750 "Retina HD" display (326 ppi, 625 cd/m2) and a solid-state, taptic-engine-powered "clickless" Home button. It features a rear 12-megapixel camera with OIS, an f/1.8 aperture, a six-element lens, and wide color capture, plus a front 7-megapixel "FaceTime HD" camera supporting 1080p video.

The iPhone 7 has an aluminum body and is rated IP67 for splash, water, and dust resistance (not waterproof). It includes stereo speakers and a Lightning port but no traditional headphone jack. Initially, it was offered in five colors: "silver," "gold," "rose gold," "black" (matte), and "jet black" (glossy), with Apple warning the jet black finish could show micro-abrasions. A (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition was available from March 21 to September 12, 2017.

Internally, the iPhone 7 is powered by a 64-bit quad-core "Apple A10 Fusion" processor (two high-performance, two high-efficiency cores), 2 GB of RAM, and 32 GB, 128 GB, or 256 GB of storage. (Jet black and red were initially 128/256 GB only; a 32 GB jet black model was added and the 256 GB option was discontinued for all colors on Sept 12, 2017). It also supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO, Bluetooth 4.2, LTE (4G), and NFC for Apple Pay (with this Japan-specific model adding FeliCa support).

Apple's battery life estimates are up to 40 hours of audio, 14 hours of 3G talk time, 12 hours of 3G/LTE internet use, 14 hours of Wi-Fi internet use, 13 hours of wireless video, and 10 days of standby.

In Japan, although prices were later reduced, this model was initially sold unlocked and contract-free for ¥72,800 (32 GB), ¥83,800 (128 GB), and ¥94,800 (256 GB).

Evaluation

Japanese technology critics specially commended this region-specific iPhone 7 variant for its groundbreaking FeliCa integration, marking Apple's first significant localization effort for contactless payment ecosystems outside of its proprietary standards. Industry reviews consistently highlighted how the seamless Suica, iD, and QuicPay compatibility transformed daily transit and commerce experiences, representing a technological breakthrough that elevated Apple's position within Japan's sophisticated mobile payment infrastructure. Professional evaluations emphasized that this model maintained all acclaimed iPhone 7 features while introducing culturally essential functionality that demonstrated Apple's commitment to regional market adaptation. Critics recognized this implementation as a strategic milestone that successfully bridged Western smartphone innovation with Japanese consumer behavior patterns.
