Overview

It's important to know that this A2106 iPhone XR was sold exclusively in Japan. It supports FDD-LTE bands 1-5, 7, 8, 11-14, 17-21, 25, 26, 28-30, and 66, as well as TD-LTE bands 34, 38-42. It lacks compatibility with bands 32 or 71 but includes support for Sony's FeliCa.

All iPhone XR models feature a haptic touch-enabled 6.1-inch LCD "Liquid Retina HD" display (1792x828, 326 ppi) that covers nearly the entire front. It has a front "TrueDepth" camera in the "notch" for "Advanced Face ID," 7MP photos, and 1080p video with Portrait mode and lighting effects. The rear wide-angle (f/1.8) 12MP camera has OIS and shoots 4K photos and video.

The iPhone XR has an "aerospace grade" 7000 series aluminum frame with a glass front and back, and is IP67-rated for splash, water, and dust resistance. It was sold in six colors: yellow, white, coral, black, blue, and (PRODUCT) RED.

Internally, it is powered by a 64-bit, 7 nm "Apple A12 Bionic" processor with a six-core CPU and an "8-core Neural Engine." It includes 3 GB of RAM and 64, 128, or 256 GB of storage. It supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi with 2x2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, LTE Advanced, NFC for Apple Pay, "Express Cards with power reserve," and dual SIMs (one physical nano SIM and one eSIM), in addition to FeliCa for this Japan-specific model.

Apple estimates up to 65 hours of audio, 25 hours of talk time, 15 hours of internet use, and 16 hours of wireless video playback. The glass back allows for Qi-standard wireless charging.

In Japan, this unlocked, SIM-free iPhone XR was initially priced at ¥84,800 (64 GB), ¥90,800 (128 GB), and ¥101,800 (256 GB). After several price reductions and the discontinuation of the 256 GB option, the model was fully retired on September 14, 2021.

Evaluation

The Japanese iPhone XR variant demonstrated Apple's nuanced understanding of regional market requirements through its thoughtful integration of local payment technologies. Critics praised the inclusion of FeliCa support, which enabled seamless transactions across Japan's sophisticated contactless payment ecosystem including transit systems and retail locations. The device successfully combined the XR's accessible pricing with features essential for Japanese daily life, earning recognition for its practical localization approach. Technology reviewers appreciated how this model maintained the global XR's impressive performance and visual quality while adding crucial functionality for the domestic market. The availability of vibrant color options resonated particularly well with Japanese consumers who valued both aesthetics and functionality. Industry observers noted this variant's success in making Apple's ecosystem more accessible to a broader range of Japanese users without compromising on essential local features or build quality.
